One of the things you just have to make time for on a visit to Sydney is a visit to The Rocks and the Rocks Market which is partly under the Harbour Bridge. Mo and I spent a morning there before Fiona eventually caught up with us and took us off to our afternoon adventure.

Great place The Rocks, we'll be there in June, our daughter loves in Sydney and works not far from there.
ReplyDeleteWell, Bill, I certainly think it's a great place to visit (Sydney in general and The Rocks in particular) but I wouldn't like to live there (or in any city!).
DeleteI love houses with verandahs and usually like the look of old ones better than new ones.
ReplyDeleteBy the way I have been intending to mention the book you sent me in my blog. I am sorry I have not yet done so. I meant to add it in with the latest post about murals, as it is also relevant to the Whistler Room post. Then I forgot! And now it's too late. I am getting a lot of pleasure from the book, though, and will get around to mentioning it soon.
One of the things that struck me most about Sydney, Jenny, was the huge variety of housing all placed seemingly randomly and, of course, verandahs are almost an essential for the lifestyle as well as looking beautiful. To me that is so much more preferable than the insistence on uniformity and compatibility so beloved of town planners in Britain. For a second I though 'Book? Blog mention?'. Even then it took me a while to remember the details. Oh dear. Age cometh not alone.
DeleteWhen I see arts & crafts markets or exhibitions, I am always in two minds about them. There are amazing examples of creativity, many beautiful things, but I often wonder who buys all that, and then clutter their homes with yet another piece of deco.
ReplyDeleteThe Rocks market looks a great place for a leisurely stroll. I suppose the tent structure is there permanently, or is it just a temporary market?
Meike the tent structure looked pretty well established to me but I imagine that it can be dismantled reasonably easily if need be. Few of us live in houses uncluttered to some degree or other with 'stuff' and 'things'. I'm not a lover of too much clutter but then what is my acceptable level would be way too much for yours. Just as I know of people with keepsakes and so on all over the place each one either holding a memory or a visual pleasure for them. What you say holds good though to the extent than many of the things produced and sold do not satisfy needs they simply create and satisfy wants.

Here we are utilizing old buildings too and turning them into shops and offices...I must write a post soon to highlight some of them.
Virginia it was a wonderful place to explore and there were lots of beautiful things but I'm not sure there were that many bargains. Of course I meant the dog's. I look forward to your posts on the buildings of your Island.
