Thankful Thursday

I woke up this morning.

That makes it a
Good Day
in my book.

One day perhaps I won't wake up
or
perhaps I'll just not see the end of the day.

Until then I'll not sweat the small stuff
(and it's mostly small stuff*).

Until then I shall be thankful for the fact that I woke and got through to the end of the day.

*My 'does it matter' test:
Will it matter in a year? No?
Then will it matter in a month? No?
Then will it matter in a week? No?
Then will it matter in an hour?  No?
Then why does it matter now?

  1. My Dad, who would have been 74 this year, always read the obituaries to see if his name was there. He was a bit of a 'clown'. I love the Erma Bombeck philosophy ~ Don't sweat the small stuff ~ and it is ALL small stuff.

    1. Ah yes Carol. The day you find your name in the obituaries is that day that I would say "Well that's a bugger then. I hadn't expected that." Rather like the start of Frances book Dead Ernest: "Nobody expected Ernest to die. Least of all Ernest."

    1. Virginia I've used that test so many times since I was given the book 'Don't Sweat The Small Stuff' many years ago by Marcel.

  5. And you, Bob, of all people are qualified to say that.

  6. Excellent plan...don't sweat the small stuff. It's easy for some of to not sweat the small stuff. Other people have major problems with the small stuff.

  8. I like your "does it matter test", but I'm nowhere near as good at "not sweating the small stuff" as you are so I think I'd have to change the second to last line to "Then will it matter in a couple of hours?". I'm working on it though!

    1. I used to sweat the small stuff Helen. Decades ago everything seemed to matter and I gradually realised that so many things don't. One moment of epiphany was when I couldn't get a bed on Skye when the ferry was cancelled. I eventually found one in the hotel in the square at Portree but there was a wedding on and the only room was right above the ballroom and the incessant beat was likely to go on into the wee small hours and I was dead beat. There was a knock on my door and someone from the wedding said that they had heard that I had been given the room and as it would be noisy would I like to come down and join the party. I was too tired (even if I'd been inclined) having driven from Liverpool that day. All of a sudden though I wondered why the noise mattered. Why did it upset me? As soon as I realised that it needn't it didn't and I went straight to sleep. Since then being told that there was nothing they could do for my cancer at the time and that it was 'only a matter of time, let's hope that there's plenty of it" had a profound affect on my outlook on things. It's not something I'd recommend but it does focus the mind on what's important to one.

  9. I have just read the obituary of my friends next door neighbour who died aged 110 and went through a horrible concentration camp in the war. She was always cheerful. She said that optimism helped her live a long time. I am now kicking myself that I did not ask for an introduction. I was really really wishing I had met her, reading the obituary.

This doesn't exactly relate to your post, but I hope you think it is a bit relevant.

    1. Actually Jenny I can see exactly why you would think of that. Wouldn't it have been such a wonderful privilege to have been able to share just a tiny bit of her experiences. I bet that she never sweated the small stuff!
