On the way back from Dannevirke last week I passed through Tikotino. On the State Highway you could easily miss it - there is a signpost and a hotel/café which I had never seen open until last week. As I had plenty of time and it was a lovely day I decided to turn into the village and see what was there. The first thing that I foundwas the War Memorial Hall. For such a small place (it's so small I can't even find any statistics showing its population) the Memorial Hall was impressive. It also had excellent always-open toilets. It's the only place on SH 2 between Napier and Dannevirke so that's a useful thing to know so I've logged that away into the memory banks.
In searching for information on Tikokino I discovered that it had a namesake in Poland. I learn something every day.
I see the sign man has called. It looks a great place for some low light images. A wonderful place.
ReplyDeleteRural but civilized... is my conclusion from pictures + signs ;)
ReplyDeleteI like your photos. Especially the one with the sheep grazing.
ReplyDeleteI had to look over that third photo a few times, there's something special about it, Graham. There's so much history there, story to tell.
ReplyDeleteMust admit I've never heard of that place. You certainly found a few good reasons for stopping.
ReplyDeleteAdrian, what puzzled me about the sign was why only Holden Road was highlighted. Because it's on a fast stretch of road with potential hazards I've never read the sign before because I've never stopped. Rather defeats the object of the sign I suppose.
ReplyDeleteIt's a place that I shall hopefully explore a bit more some time although I suspect that there's very little else to see and photograph. There is certainly plenty of history in the area.
Why is there an outside chimney GB. Has the house disintegrated?

PS My blog reader still doesn't like you, there's something wrong somewhere!
I think the house has disappeared because it will have been wooden whilst the chimney in those days was brick.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sad that Blogger doesn't like me. I try to be nice to it. Seriously I don't think that it's anything I'm doing. I've checked and I'm still seeing your posts.
