A Waning Gibbous Moon

On the drive home yesterday as we were on the outskirts of Napier I looked up and there in the sky (where else would you find it?)  was what I think is a waning gibbous moon.  The photo was taken in daylight, in a car, through the windscreen/windshield at 100 kph.  I wasn't displeased.

The Moon

The Full Moon: Saturday 19 March 2011 at 1940 NZ time taken with my Sony DSC-HX1 on 20x optical magnification (approx equivalent to 600 mm)

FULL MOON
In the darkening sky, if you cast your eyes,
You will see the silver lady rise,
Bathing the world in a steely blue
Edged with a haunting, silver hue.
Higher and higher she rises with grace,
Shrouding the trees in a cloak of lace,
Sending her rays to the waters below,
Casting reflections in ripple and flow.
Oh, such a majesty gracing the sky,
Passing a twinkle to stars riding high,
Oh, what a magickal sight we purvey
From dusk, till the night gives in to day.
And so, she sinks in horizons west,
Content in the knowledge that we saw her best,
She'll return once again when the sky turns black,
And if you should whisper, she might whisper back.

One of Those Days

On the whole most of my days are Good days but occasionally I have 'one of Those Days' which could have been slightly better.  What surprises me is just how unphased I seem to get by Things these days.  Today, for example, had its moments.

Firstly it's been a wonderful, hot day with a really good breeze this morning.  I've caught up on quite a few blogs. I went to town.  I cancelled Sky TV and got a Freeview box and installed it - in reverse order, I'm not sure why I didn't write it the other way round.

On the way into town an Aussie lad in his step-mother's car drove into the back of The Handbag. He did no damage to The Handbag but hundreds of dollars worth to her car. I almost felt sorry for him. Mind you I did have the advantage of modern technology when I stopped (a woman stepped onto a crossing rather unexpectedly). He was a good way behind but the skid marks were three or four times the length of his (large) car so heaven knows what speed he was doing. Glad Game: he didn't have an airbag. Replacing it would have been greater than the value of her car!

Then I left my car keys in the lock of the boot of the car and went off into town. A kind chap took them into the nearby police station.  The constable left a message on my phone. Fortunately I went into the Police Station first so no-one had to bring the spare keys out to me.  Glad Game:  well, what's not to be glad about that one.  The kindness of people is all about us.

And last night I sat on the deck on the 'phone from sundown until the moon lit the land:

And then I went up to The House and I looked at the moon through Martin's telescope.  I love the moon.

The Moon

Yesterday afternoon I arrived home from Dannevirke at about a quarter past three.  By four the first load of washing was on the line.  By six the second was on the line and the first was dry. By  seven fifteen the second lot was dry too.  Why?  Because there was a lovely breeze and it had been 35 deg on the deck this afternoon. But more than that the moon was high in the day lit sky

So Far but Yet So Near

The rain has cleared leaving a clear night sky. The moon is almost full. We may be apart but when I look at the sky and remember that we are standing on the same earth, looking at the same moon, somehow you don't seem so far away after all.

Full Moon - Almost

Tomorrow is the Full Moon. Last night Wendy and I sat on the deck in the late (and early) hours chatting about Jung, Neitze, Voltaire and eugenics and the sort of thing one just chats about at that time of night. We also thought about the moon that was providing the light which enabled us to locate our wine glasses on the table. So I thought I would share it with you in case you can't see it tonight.

The Moon

The Moon has just passed its first quarter. It has been so clear the last few nights that I thought I'd try a photograph. So this is what I could see about half an hour ago.
