Picture Size: A Test

I was looking at my blog on the iPad last night and I realised that I couldn't see the whole of any of my pictures.

For many years now I have set all my images to a maximum dimension of 800px which is what the template width allows.  I do this partly because it saves people clicking on an image to enlarge.  How many people do?  And partly because when I have the blog printed the pictures come out at the correct size.

So I thought that I would ask how many of you can see the following test card images in full.  It would be useful if you can't if you could tell me whether you are reading it on a tablet, iPad, laptop or whatever and the browser you are using.  I have used two test card sizes.  The top one is the size of my usual pics and the one below is a smaller one.  The chaffinch is just there for the ride.

640 x 480 px

    I can see all pictures in full without having to click on the. As far as I can recall, the same applies to all of the pictures on your blog I have seen. I used a laptop

    On mac - can see all perfectly - but I have noticed lately that there have been occasions when I can't see all the pictures - or read all the captions below them when on my ipad. I think I can open them larger on it if I want to see them fully - will have to check!
    Actually I still find it frustrating to read many blogs on my ipad anyway - if I want to comment I have t remember to save the writing - as I usually lose it first time. If i press preview first it is more likely to work. My comments are not that important - and they are rarely worth typing twice.... in your case I often just go and like it on facebook instead or retyping it all....
    I loathe blogging off my phone or ipad - occasionally yes - but nothing that involves many words!

    From my PC, using Firefox, I can see them in full. I can click on them but don't see them bigger then.
    By the way, I often click on the pictures on blogs. Usually I first read the entire post, with the description of the pictures, and then I click on the first picture and view them one after the other, enjoying the visual impact they have. Of course there is more impact the better and bigger the pictures are, but that is never a problem on your blog.

    Graham, I never publish large photos because they don't fit my blogging template. I had noticed previously that I cannot see the full pic or caption on your blog posts on my iPad, but that just means I have to read them on my laptop.

      Carol the iPad seems to be the main problem. I'm not sure yet whether anyone uses another tablet follows me or has a problem..

    I can see both without an issue on my desktop PC, although not surprising really given the width of the monitor I'm starring at! There is an alternative to using small photos which don't show the detail for readers who have a big enough screen; you can update the template so it resizes the pictures automagically for you. I don't have a quick example to hand but I'll see if I can come up with something simple and then do a post on my code blog for you.

      Thanks Frances. That's par for the iPad which seems to have the main issue (I know you love that word!). They are test cards, Frances, like the ones that used to be on steam televisions.

    I had been meaning to mention that for some time. Like Fi above, I was missing some of the photo and the captions.
    The bottom test photo is good.
    Thank goodness the beautiful chaffinch is along for the ride....that is good payment for taking this survey.

    I use an ipad.
    The top testcard has lost a strip down the rhs.
    The other testcard is fine.
    And the bird!

    I don't have a tablet. On my Android mobile phone both the test pictures look the same size to me (in the mobile version of the blog) and I see both of them in full.

    When I have my laptop connected to a separate bigger screen (as I do in my study) I also see both in full, and then the 800 px is bigger than the 640.

    When I use the laptop screen, I see the 640 px in full, but not all of the 800 px ... ?? ... Oh, I just figured out why. That's because when using the smaller screen, I need to enlarge (ctrl+) the text further to be able to read it. And when I enlarge the text to readable size (for me), then part of the big picture disappears in under the sidebar. Actually the same thing happens if I enlarge the text more on the bigger screen. It's just that when using the bigger screen, I don't usually need to enlarge that much. (Which is why I got the bigger screen in the first place...)

    On the first one a small part of the right side is missing. I use Chrome on a PC. The second test is all there.

      Red now that the HTML code has been altered it should fit on any machine and browser. I should be interested to know if you are still having the problem.

    I'm usually reading on my desktop PC and everything looks great. But I do visit your blog on my iPad as well, and haven't seen images being cut off. Then again, if they are landscapes, and the tablet cuts of a part of it on the side, maybe people won't even notice it.

      I suspect you are correct Mersad and that people don't notice if it's a landscape. I happened to notice yesterday which is why I put the testcards on. iPad's do seem to cut off down the right hand side.
