Marcel wants to know.
I've been racking my brain.
To help you if you come from somewhere unfamiliar with the saying, here is Wiki's opening on the subject: sliced bread is a loaf of bread that has been pre-sliced with a machine and packaged for convenience. It was first sold in 1928, advertised as "the greatest forward step in the baking industry since bread was wrapped". This led to the popular phrase, "the greatest thing since sliced bread".
Electricity perhaps?
ReplyDeleteYes Carol. Electricity. For that you did need coal or water. Gas came after coal.
DeleteI'm getting muddled up. Let us settle for the good and planet destroying electricity.
Hi Adrian ~ nice to see you back online. How about steam even then? Or fire?
DeleteI'm still thinking.......
ReplyDeleteI did that once Virginia. It hurt too much and I gave it up.
DeleteThe wheel! :) xoxo
ReplyDeleteChocolate - no doubt about it!
ReplyDelete(Not keen on sliced bread. I rather cut the loaf myself. Keeps it fresher etc. But then again, I am supposed to be particular about my bread. I think no country has more different kinds of bread and rolls than Germany.)
Since sliced bread came in in 1928 the best thing SINCEsliced bread is the mute button the television remote control.
ReplyDeleteOooh, I like that, John! :)
DeleteBefore sliced bread - for me it would have to be the wheel. Where would I be without it- especially living out here. After sliced bread - it would have to have been "Type-Ex." The relief at being able to throw the rubber away - not that I needed it much you understand!
ReplyDeleteGood thinking. I'd probably add the spillchucker to that.
DeleteThe greatest thing before the pre-sliced bread must have been a sharp knife...
ReplyDeleteBrilliant. I hadn't realised your mind ran on such logical lines, Monica.
DeleteSliced bread is great?????
ReplyDeleteNow there you have it Viv. I'm with you and Meike on that one. I do occasionally buy sliced bread but generally in Scotland I make my own and here in NZ I usually buy unsliced.
DeleteFunny question and I vote for beer as the answer.
