Hawkes Bay Hills in Evening Light

The hills of Hawkes Bay and South towards the Manawatu Gorge hold an intense fascination for me.  On the way to and from Wanganui last weekend I took the opportunity to take photos out of the car rear side (and not too clean) window.  The photos were all taken in the evening with the light at it's distorted richest.  They are not brilliant but they will serve as a record of the hills that I love so much.

  1. These are beautiful. Can't see any muck at all with the exception of cow muck.
It does look a great place.

    1. Thanks Adrian. I would have loved to have been able to stop and set things up properly but we were travelling to a timetable. Taking photos through a window at 100kph avoiding roadside trees and fences is quite a challenge.

  2. They look differently when the light shines on them, don't they? Very beautiful, I think so too.

    1. Kay an hour or two at that time of the evening can make such a difference to the colour temperature. I really love the light the evening sun casts.

  3. Very peaceful looking... with the setting sun casting its shadow on the hills this way, it looks as if it's saying goodnight and putting them to bed.
Our national anthem has a line "these fields and hills beyond recall", but with these photos you will always be able to recall when you're away.

    1. Yes Virginia, blogging for me is rather like a diary and being able to look back at these is all the more important because I don't hold images in my head.

    1. Yes CJ. With two parents who both loved the hills and mountains we could hardly have not inherited the love.

  6. It's a very special landscape indeed - and even though I've never been there it's starting to feel sort of familiar from following your blog.

    1. Nic dit land is vol met heuvels, bergen, vulkanen, gletsjers, fjorden en de meest prachtige landschap. In tegenstelling tot het Nederlands relatief weinig van het is plat.

Nic, this country is full of hills, mountains, volcanoes, glaciers, fjords and the most wonderful countryside. Unlike the Nederlands relatively little of it is flat.

    1. Thanks Doreen. I've only been in northern Michigan and I don't recall any mountains. Without mountains or at least high hills in my life I'd be quite lost.

  10. There's something special about hillcountry, isn't there? I haven't driven on the highway between Wanganui and Raetihi for years, probably close to 20 years, but that hillcountry immediately springs to mind when I look at these.

    1. Yes Pauline there is. And to have the Uppity Downity Mountains on one's doorstep as you have is a huge and reassuring bonus.
