Just a quickie today. Not because I haven't got loads for which to be thankful but because I had some pictures that I took recently that I wanted to use - honesty is, I usually think, the best policy.
Roast Tomatoes |
Lavender essence for drinks |
Champagne and lavender essence |
Champagne with strawberry liqueur |
At dinner on the night before Jamie left for his gap year in Europe and China Wendy had produced some unusual drinks: lavender and strawberry which, frankly, I though sounded rather awful. I'll give most things a try though and I did realise that even if I didn't like the taste the colours were rather photogenic. The essences were topped up with champagne and, I have to confess, were both unusual and much more pleasant than I had anticipated.
The roast tomatoes were lovely both to eat and photograph. I often use roast tomatoes not just because I love eating them but because they provide such great visual impact.
So today I am just giving thanks for food and drink and for the opportunity to share these thoughts.
Delightful images and what delicious colours! I have never thought of roasting tomatoes whole and on the vine like that - a super idea which I may steal.
ReplyDeleteI'm also not sure I'd like lavender champagne, but I'd be game to try it!
Aftermas perhaps Katherine.....I'll try and remember.
DeleteOne year I made masses of Limoncello for Christmas presents. That is supposed to be rather good in champagne.
DeleteNow you have given me an idea.......I'll get a bottle of Baileys, some condensed orange juice and host a really economical cocktail party.
ReplyDeleteExcuse me Adrian I just have to dash somewhere (and you don't even need the orange juice to make me....).
DeleteAdrian, please leave my Baileys alone.....don't mess with a good drink.
DeleteNo end to the combinations that come to mind so long as champagne is the base!
ReplyDeleteI love the roast tomatoes and have never seen them done this way. I will try it soon. I suppose a brush with olive oil and roast till the skins split???
You got it spot on Jill. So far as champagne is concerned I think on the whole I prefer it as it comes.
DeleteStrawberry yes, lavender no. To me the smell of lavender says soap or laundry detergent!
ReplyDeleteMonica I would have agreed with you but, oddly, it doesn't taste like it smells. Well I didn't think so.
DeleteMy Mum makes strawberry and other kinds of liqueur of the fruit from my parents' allotment, and that strawberry one is like summer in bottles. It is lovely when you add a little bit to a glass of champagne! I've never tried lavender champagne, but knowing me, I think I'd enjoy that one very much as well.
ReplyDeleteYour Mum has lots of talents doesn't she? (I've never really understood why rhetorical questions need ?s). When I was a young child I used to love going with my Dad to The Allotment. It was at a time when food was in short supply. Having seen photos of your parents' allotment it looks as though it is very productive and must give your Mum plenty on which to exercise her talents.
DeleteBoth drinks look interesting and very pretty, but somehow I don't think my stomach cares for any particular colour. I have a strawberry allergy, but I might consider tasting the lavender.
ReplyDeleteThe roasted tomatoes also look delish.
No, Virginia, I didn't think I'd like drinking something coloured lavender but it was, as I said, not too bad.
DeleteThose tomatoes look fabulous!Roasting brings out so much flavor!!!
ReplyDeleteIt certainly does Lisa.
DeleteMakes a change from putting a whole strawberry in the champagne I guess ....
ReplyDeleteLove roast tomatoes, such intense flavour. Yum with roasted garlic mmmmmm
Actually Fiona although it was okay I think I'd rather have the plain champagne and just eat the strawberry. It's ages since I roasted garlic with tomatoes. Thanks for reminding me.
DeleteThe strawberry sounds good but I think I might give the lavender a miss. I love the scnet and the colour burt to drink... mmm, not sure. Love roast tomatoes to but rarely get around to doing them.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't sure about the lavender either CJ but it was actually quite drinkable.
