It Felt Autumnal

This morning there was a mist over the orchards and the light coming through the trees into the geological bowl in which I live highlighted the Highland Cattle and even the breath showed up in the crisp morning air.

  1. Well, good for you (perhaps) to at least get a "whiff" of changing seasons, before jumping straight back into spring/summer! :) Actually early autumn is probably my favourite season (even if I certainly would not like to skip spring and summer!)

    1. Yes Monica, it's a reminder that the summer has been a bit fleeting this year. Who knows though: we may yet get more days like yesterday which actually turned out very warm indeed.

  2. Ooh, don't you just love that first hint that the seasons are changing? The four seasons are not so noticeable here, but when you get that first crisp morning it is exciting. Enjoy GB.

    1. Carol in the normal course of events I might enjoy the first hint of changing seasons but it usually presages change and makes me realise how fleeting each season is.

  3. No hint of autumn here yet. Or maybe I have to get out of bed earlier. Your first shot looks almost like a water colour painting. The second is fabulous. Looks like it's too early for him to be up and about, he's enjoying the morning sun warming his flanks.

    1. Thanks Pauline and, yes, shortly after that he decided it was time to get up and make the most of the sun before it got so hot that he had to hide under the trees.

    1. Mist at the start of a day is usually a sign that the weather will be good. So I like it.
Mist aan het begin van de dag is meestal een teken dat het weer goed zal zijn. Dus ik vind het leuk.

  5. Sounds like the beginning of a very good book accompanied by the "water colour painting" photo...just perfect.
My oh my, that sure is a huge beast in the second photo.

    1. Virginia I'd never really thought of my prose being quite like that but thank you for the compliment.

  7. VirginiaC is right, this sounds like the beginning of a book, and one I'd love to read!

We've had such a spring day here yesterday that I found it hard to focus on work, which is VERY unlike me. I was working from home and kept wandering to the open window, letting the sun shine on my face, listening to the birds in the trees and looking at the crocus and primula and snowdrops in my neighbour's garden. Lucky, the cat who lives downstairs, was sunning himself on the patio and I would have very much liked to join him.

    1. Meike given my total lack of imagination when it comes to writing (years of writing government legalese didn't help of course) I think it would be a very dull book. Your spring day sounds lovely too. Spring always has that hope of summer to come. When I lived in Scotland full time autumn had the promise of long nights for reading and doing 'winter' things. That was the positive element. The cold short days was the negative.

  8. Amazing! I have never been to New Zealand, but I can see why Peter Jackson chose it for his Tolkien films. It looks like the car is driving straight into fairyland.

And if that is what they refer to as a "cow" - well, the ones around here seem a bit mundane next to that beautiful monstrosity!

    1. That's very poetic Nathaniel. As for the beast it's actually a Scottish Highland bull and it's massive. Its horns are 5 or 6 feet across.

  9. Hell, that Highland coo really is a horny beast. They're massive!

    1. YP I would reckon 5 or 6 feet across. I'll try and measure it one day. Hmmm. Perhaps not.

    1. Thanks Mersad. It was fortuitous. I looked out of my bedroom window and that's what I saw.
