The Apple Harvest

It's a bit earlier than usual but this morning a crew arrived and picked a crate or two of apples from the orchard in front of The Cottage.  I'm not sure why because its a couple of weeks until those particular apples are usually ready.

  1. They look ready and your highland bull seems to agree with me. Give him an apple.

    1. That's what he's waiting for Adrian. The pickers usually see that the cattle get plenty but this crew seemed far more intent on the job in hand. The apples do look ready to me too. Perhaps all the sun has brought the harvest on but the sunny years in the past were harvested mid March. I know the orchardist but he's so busy at this time of year he never stops for a chat.

  2. "Where are you taking MY apples?" "Hey guys bring them back!" Mr. Bull doesn't seemed too pleased.
Would you believe that we pay 50 cents for one of those apples here?

    1. Yes I would believe that Virginia. And the orchardist will be lucky to see 1 of those cents. I'm not sure what they are getting this year but last year most sold for under cost because they didn't meet the size specifications because of the bad weather. The rest goes in distribution costs and supermarket profits (and into our pension funds amongst many other places).

    1. You would not believe it Heather but surrounded as I am by orchards I rarely eat apples.

    1. I think I'd rather be hit by the tractor than the bull, Marcel. There is a LOT of steak inside that hide.

  6. They look ready enough for me! Sometimes I see apples from NZ here in the supermarket. I wonder if some of them come from the orchard in front of your house. The ones I have at the moment are from Germany, though (if possible, I prefer buying local). Usually, I eat an apple or some other fruit every day. I love all fruit, and apples are so easy to transport in my handbag to the office without leaving a mess, and look forward to having it in the afternoon.

    1. Yes Meike they do look ready. I'm still puzzled, though, as to why they took only two crates and then went away.

  7. I love that last photo where the longhorn is curious!
You know my favorite apple is the Honeycrisp, and they have just gone out of season. Boo. We love apples though, and Hubby is always on the look out for a new type.

    1. Yes, Lisa, he's hoping for some apples. I've not heard of a Honeycrisp. I made a resolution yesterday to eat an apple a day. If I get to the end of a year from now and am still eating them then That'll probably be about 345 more raw apples than I had in the last 12 months.
