Post of the Year - So Far

I get a little irritated when the Car of the Year 2013 is announced in September 2012 or the Book of the Year 2012 is only open to books published before the middle of the year.  Which is why Pauline's post Introduce a Friend gets my nomination for Blog Post of 2012 - So Far.

Of course there are so many posts of considerable merit even in my tiny corner of Blogland but this one really struck a note and it's not just because I know the writer and her friend.

I can think of quite a few posts by many Blogland friends which have gladdened my heart at the moment I have read them and sometimes they come back to me but just occasionally there are posts which really make me stop in my tracks and stick in what passes for my mind.  Of course it's a very personal choice and it's nothing to do with any particular post being 'better' than another one.  It's all very subjective.

So, for example, I can never forget Jenny's Objects in the Background from her blog An English Travel Writer.  For many that might be a very ordinary post compared with many of Jenny's long and interesting descriptions of her travels but to me the photo was magical and memorable.

Then there was the post a few months ago by Jaz of Treacy Travels who has stopped blogging for the moment (which saddens me because it was Jaz who started Thankful Thursday and she has been inspirational) but who posted  in August Thankful Thursday: The Power of Words.  That post contains so much from very useful advice to sentences to stop you in your tracks when you know what Jaz has gone through in the last few years.  (I've just noticed that I never commented on that post.  I must have been overcome at the time.)

I'm rather sorry that I started this because the more I think about it the more I realise just how many wonderful posts there are amongst those whose Blogworlds I inhabit and there will be posts I come across or remember which I wish I had mentioned.  Most of us write perfectly ordinary posts which are usually interesting or entertaining and have photos showing us each others worlds.  Some of those posts have inspired me to look at physical things more carefully or look at my ideas from a different perspective.  Some like Adrian's have been educational (geographically and politically!), amusing, controversial, always entertaining and with superb photos.

Are there posts out there which you would nominate - so far?

  1. I agree Gibbs Farm is a truly wonderful place and Pauline deserves the Edwards Blogger Prize.

    1. I would like to nominate Keith. His early morning video with off the cuff commentary is always a high point of my day.
He can be found here.......CALDECOTE LAKE

    2. So funny, Adrian. I wrote the post before Pauline posted about Gibbs Farm although I knew she was going to. The post was delayed by an earthquake! The post that originally got to me was about her granddaughter Georgia being her friend. The rest of the post just sort of came off the cuff so to speak. I've never visited Keith so I shall go and do that. Thanks.

  2. Oh - that's too tough! I can't decide on a favourite blog, let alone on a favourite single post! Every one of the blogs I follow offer something special to me that none of the others have. From time to time, they shake me up (for instance, when Frances talks about Death Row); they make me laugh (John's pictures of Ivy or Mark's conversations with Bagman & Butler), they inspire me to read, cook or try something new, or they teach me about their corners of the world (such as the post about communal washing machines in Sweden from Monica) or where they have been travelling.
A long time ago, I tried to put them together in my post "Dear Dashboard" which is here: http://librarianwithsecrets.blogspot.de/2010/09/dear-dashboard.html
It still is one of the most popular posts of my blog, but it does need updating.
A single post? No way :-)

    1. If I had been responding to a post Meike I would have said pretty much what you've said because I certainly don't have a favourite blog as such. It was just that on the spur of the moment Pauline's post about Georgia got to me and I thought it was really poignant. I feel very privileged to be part of a pretty darn good but small Blogworld where I learn so much about people and places from most of the posts as well as getting immense enjoyment and comradeship and friendship from their authors. I would be very saddened if I were to be deprived of those friendships.

  3. I can't name a favorite either, but I begin each day with a whirlwind trip around a good part of this world: I begin in the New England area of the United States, jump up over the border to Canada, then skip across 'the pond' to England, Germany, Scotland and New Zealand. All this travel from my home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA. It is a joyful wonder each day and I can't imagine not having all these 'friends' to follow and learn from.

    1. Yes, Jill, I think I should have worded it differently. I was really just being light hearted after a particular post really hit the spot with me. I agree with you that it is wonderful to be able to tour the world through the eyes of real people and the way they look at things.

  4. First of all I totally agree with you about feeling a little annoyed when Whatever of 2013 is announced before 2013 has even begun.

However, suggesting a best post from 2012 (so far) is not likely to be a "fair" choice either. As our memory usually works, one is much more likely to go with one from the last week rather than something written back in February... That's not to say the old stuff has necessarily gone missing from memory altogether but it takes a different process to recall it. So I'll refrain from nominations, I think ;)

    1. I agree with your comment Monica. I was definitely not looking for a 'best' post. It was simply a light hearted question given the effect that Pauline's post had had on me that day. Of course there are many memorable posts which we will recall when the appropriate trigger occurs in our brain or when we look back. This was a spontaneous thought and post.

    2. I should perhaps add that I have no difficulty seeing how Pauline's post could have that effect, Graham. :)

  5. Thank you for mentioning my picture, Graham. I know so well what you mean about a post which stays with you. I actually remember one of yours, which showed a dog frolicking on the Hebridean shore - really captured that feeling of happiness a dog can give off. Mostly, interestingly, I mostly remember pictures. I might make a little list and do a post about them myself, although it won't be an "end of year" one, but will happen at some random time in the year.

    1. You are welcome Jenny. If it was a collie that would be Molly. She certainly made the most of her stay on Lewis! I look forward to your choices.

  6. I would happily nominate one if I could but my memory is so short nowadays I can't recall what you were asking for nominations about...

  7. From your responses to the comments I think I know where you are coming from. At first I just thought, Well I'll be buggered, Blow me down, inarticulate things like that. I think you may have been touched by that post because you understand the depth of my love for this child and heard what I was trying to express. As for choosing a Post of the Year - nah, I couldn't do it, there have been too many I have admired for too many different reasons. I do think it's a bit funny, though, that you chose a post that I thought was pretty average. Another lesson for me that I can never see myself as others do. Which is probably just as well!

    1. There are many posts which touch one in one way or another at a moment in time, Pauline, but, like your one of Georgia with the umbrella, some stick in the mind for ever. This one just caught my emotions with a whallop.

  8. It would be difficult for me to choose a "Best Post" too, because I think many posts leave indelible impressions on my mind.
I love being in the company of my Blogland friends, and they all teach me something new everyday as well as inspire me to view the world differently.
So with not much ado, I award everyone the "Best Posts Award."
