The Vets

Yesterday I won the Veterans Association Croquet Handicap Singles.  I could have made that a Thankful Thursday post but for the fact that when we returned to the Motel we invited several lots of  croquet people staying at the motel to join us in our (very spacious) unit for a wee libation and  some nibbles and after that a croquet friend staying nearby in his campervan joined us for dinner and by the time he departed it was bedtime and I was far too tired to do as I am tonight and sit up and write a post.

This morning when Judy woke me with a cup of tea at 0545 I wondered how it was that I could have had all that sleep and still feel so tired.

As I surveyed all the wine bottles I wondered what on earth the person cleaning the unit would have thought of us so I decided to write him/her a little note.  The motel owner said this evening that he's heard the story!  The cleaner just left us a little addendum to our note.

    1. You should have seen me play the next day! It was Golf Croquet but you'd think I'd never played before.

  3. Congratulations GB!! I knew you had it covered.
Loved the cute little note..."That Fine!!"
We usually leave a bottle for the cleaner (full of course) and a tip for the extra work....That Fine!!

    1. Virginia, in New Zealand there is no real culture of tipping although it is creeping in in cafés.

  4. Congratulations, Graham!!! Now I don't only know (through respective blogs) a Marble Champion, but also a Croquet Champion!
How nice that there were people there to celebrate with you. Nothing so dampening to one's spirits as having an achievement to celebrate and nobody to share it with.

  5. Is there an actual Cup or something to go with the glory? If you're going to go on at this rate through the season you might need to put up an extra shelf in your cottage ;) Congrats!

    1. Yes there was a plate. There was a time, Monica, when I had a shelf full of trophies (I'm bound to have blogged about it) but my 'glory days' are past I think.

    2. "Had"? Are they the kind that pass on to the next winner? or why the past tense?

    3. Yes, Monica, they pass on to the next winner each year. Some of them are well over 50 years old and it's fascinating reading all the old names of people who have held them in the past. One of the people I played today won one of the national trophies when he was 15 and then won it again at 65 last year. Croquet has the advantage of being playable by people of all ages.

I suspect that your tiredness had a lot to do with the vino. You lush!

  7. You seem to be in top form this year! For croquet, that is. Top form for partying, too, by the sounds of it. Love the note!

    1. Thanks Jenny. Wasn't she just. I gather they all got a good laugh out of it. Mind you two people complained about the laughter (it was around 6pm so no one sleep was disturbed!) and had the Motel owner wondering until he discovered that the complainants were at the party!
