Oystercatcher

I found this lone Variable Oystercatcher (Maori, Torea or Toreapango l. Haematopus unicolor) in it's black phase on the beach at Mahunga foraging for food.

    That oystercatcher is a real eye catcher too, with the red beak and legs!

    This is quite a bird with it's long orange beak. Never have I seen one like this around our parts, for sure!

    What a coincidence. I was just reading today that the bill of the oystercatcher grows and is continually being worn down, like a guinea pig's teeth. It would be three times as long that what you see, in just a year, if it didn't use it.
