Blog Comments

I've been here before in my post on 24 February How Big is Your Blogland?  That post wasn't specifically about comments but out of it arose the fact that on certain blogs which don't use embedded comments or have templates which allow it, comments cannot be followed by subscribing to emails.  I have no idea what the critera are because quite a lot of blogs still permit embedded comments.  I know that most people don't follow up on comments and some are not interested in other people's comments.  Apart from the 'I was here' comments made on the weekly posts like the Friday Shoot Out I am interested in the comments and in following what some of my Blogland friends say in reply to my comments.  Unfortunately some of the most interesting fall into the 'can't follow' category.  This means that if I wish to follow up I have to go into their blogs and re-trace all the posts in which I was particularly interested.  Especially as some people have a habit of posing questions in response to comments.  I do hope the problem is solved soon.

  1. Come to think of it, I have no idea whether the comments on my blog are followable or not... I know that I do go back to blogs I have commented on almost every day, to see whether someone has replied to my comments.

    1. Yes, Meike, you have embedded blogs enabled and you are one of the bloggers who follows your comments and usually responds too where appropriate. I, for one, appreciate that.

  2. From my own recent enquiries in connection with changing my comments back to embedded, I understand that
1/ many bloggers aren't aware of the option to subscribe to comments at all, because they never used it
2/ for the same reason many haven't noticed that the option to subscribe to comments disappeared on the pop-up comment forms
3/ last year many had long-lasting problems with the embedded form, and that's one reason some are still sceptical to use that. However, that problem seems now to be solved: My last re-introduction of the embedded form (brought on by that previous post by yours I think) has not caused any problems.

    1. I think you are probably correct on the first two counts Monica although I've not had problems with the embedded format. To me the opportunity for dialogue is very important.

    2. Yes I agree with you about the dialogue. I never had problems to comment on embedded myself; but some of my American friends did, including two of my most frequent commentators. So that caused a bit of panic (in me) when the new subscription problem arose. NOW however the embedded seem to be working for everyone and since that's also my preference I'm happy :)

  3. It's a real begger not being able to follow. I do (well, used to) all the time, every time I make a comment.
Can you follow on mine again GB? 'Cos if you can't, I'm seriously thinking of going over to wordpress.

    1. I can follow you Katherine. You still have 'subscribe'. I experimented with Wordpress but unfortunately my blog is far too large and would not import. Presumably I have to pay their $99US a year for the upgraded version.

  4. Well, I'm glad you can subscribe to mine. Sorry about yours. I expect my blog will be too large to go over to wordpress, if yours is.
