Kitchen Gadgets

I am, as some of my friends and readers of Eagleton Notes on the subject know, a kitchen gadget person.  I love my gadgets and I have a lot of them.  One of the ones that really does save you time and energy was blogged about by my brother, Scriptor, a short while ago here.  It produced a comment by my niece Helen saying that she too liked her gadgets and got some of them at Williams Samona.   Of course I couldn't resist a quick look.  I was quite surprised by some of the gadgets but none more so than by a gadget for cutting bananas.  That has to be the oddest gadget of all time.  It would take so much longer to clean it all out after use (never mind actually using it in the first place) than using a simple knife.

  2. Oh, I don't know; maybe with a little practise, one could actually make those super-even banana slices a lot quicker than by knife. As for cleaning - possibly the person who does the cutting is not the same who does the washing-up :-)

  3. I too agree the banana slicer is pointless. However I also agree with Fi. For example I'd be happy to remove cherry stones by hand if I only had a few, but then if I had a couple of cherry trees (giving hundreds or potentially thousands of cherries) then a tool to remove the stones easily and without getting your hands messy would be essential.

I wonder if there's anyone out there who needs to slice lots of bananas regularly?!

  4. But you'd get very nice and even slices with that thing! :) I've never seen one before but a number of years back when I had problems using my right hand at all I might well have bought it if I had seen it in a shop.

  5. I'm not a big gadget person for that reason....cleaning them and for lack of space. That's where simplicity is truly me...in the kitchen ;)

  6. It reminds me of a gadget my parents own(ed) for slicing hard boiled eggs. it made perfect slices but again was a pain to clean. Only really useful if you had more than a dozen eggs all needing slicing at once.

    1. I have an egg-slicer! I could never cut slices as thin as that with a knife. I'm sure I'd cut myself even trying.

  7. Okay that website could turn out to be expensive!

No idea how often it would get used but I've always though the apple peelers were cool:

  8. Mark I too could spend a fortune at Williams-Sonoma. So far the only thing I've bought is a set of pie crust cutters like the ones we used at harvest http://frog-end-notes.blogspot.com/2011/11/harvest.html but lots of other food bloggers recommend their products.

  9. I won't scoff too soon in case the day comes when I can't slice my own banana. You know me, the least gadgety person I know!

  12. Welcome Carole. I have been fortunate to have had very strong hands but do have a few jar openers. They look more cumbersome than yours though. I think that may end up on my wish-list.
