On Being a Monkey

Brother Scriptor Senex has posted today on the Chinese New Year,  the Year of the Dragon.  He posed the question as to what Chinese symbol were his readers born under.  I was born in the year of the Monkey.  Apparently people born in the Year of the Monkey can cope with almost any intricacy with a sober mind. Ambitious and knowledgeable as they are, they can succeed in whatever career they decide to embrace. They are bright, active, clever, good at competition, and act quickly according to the situation. They are highly sociable, good in comprehension, and easily merged with others, but dislike to be controlled by others and prefer fresh things.  Well I don't like being controlled that's true bu obviously someone got something wrong somewhere so far as everything else is concerned!

  1. Sounds like you to me! I'm a Rooster. Apparantly Roosters strengths are they are deep thinkers considered to be honest, bright, communicative, ambitious, capable and warm-hearted. They have strong self-respect and seldom rely on others. They have a quick mind and hot temper. Hot temper a strength? I think the weaknesses are a lot more accurate but let's not get into that - remember the hot temper bit!

    1. Well most of that fits you from what I've experienced. Mind you I've not seen the temper (and hope I never do 'cos I can imagine.....).

  2. My Chinese sign is the Monkey as well, and apart from ambitious (which I very clearly am NOT), I find most of what you have listed to be true for me.
However, the whole idea of such signs, which boils down to putting humans into mental drawers, is not one I believe in (I do read my horoscope for the fun of it, though, when I happen to come across one of those silly women's magazines at the doctor's).

    1. Gosh, Meike, you are lucky. I was ambitious as a young man but lost that ambition when I went to live in the Outer Hebrides.

    1. Good to know that. Another person with whom to tread carefully!

    1. The Rat sounds to have rather pleasing qualities, Ruby. I should not be unhappy being a Rat.

  5. Doesn't sound too unlike you to me either! I've never been a fan of or believer in astrology though - and the idea of all people born in the same year being alike seems almost even more ridiculous to me than the monthly signs. Well, at least until I followed that link in Scriptor's post and found that Sheep (that's me) "only want a bit of peace, enjoy carrying on with life in their own quiet, individual way --- and focus much of their energy on artistic hobbies..."

    1. Yes, Monica, I sometimes wonder because I tend to have many typically Geminian traits.

    2. Never really having bothered about astrology and horoscopes I have no idea what are supposed to be typically Geminian traits. I doubt I could even name all the signs on the zodiac from memory. Certainly not in order!

    3. Neither can I Monica. Which is an irritation when doing crosswords.

  6. It's strange to compare how we see ourselves with how others see us. I'd like to think that I had some of the qualities attributed to my sign but I suppose I would think that I know myself better than others know me - wouldn't I?

    1. I think we rarely take the exact same view of ourselves as other people do. I guess in one sense we know ourselves better than anyone else; but on the other hand we're also often blind to things that other people might see. Not only our faults but our good qualities as well!

  7. I'm beginning to see now why last night I got a dozen emails which I couldn't sort out what they were referring to or for whom the comment was meant... (having this and another recent post of yours on follow-up) I suppose this new comment system is supposed to be an improvement but I'm not so sure. A week or two ago I got into (or caused!) complete chaos when I ran into something similar on another friend's blog. Nothing ended up where it was supposed to go.

  8. I'm not sure about this layout Monica. I've always preferred the pop-up because of the amount of internet capacity I've had but this one is growing on me.

  9. I pretty sure Helen and I are both monkeys too - 1980 - one of my biggest issues is with being controlled, I'd rather be encouraged!
