Connecting Spaces

At The Cottage the living room has double ranch sliders onto the deck.  My bedroom (the room nearest to you in the picture below) has a ranch slider onto the deck too.  The deck is covered and provides shelter from rain and sun.  I regard it as an integral part of my living space and is provides a place to eat and sit and have coffee in the open air.  During the summer days I rarely have the sliders closed and I often use the deck to get from one room to the other as well.  For me the deck is far more important than just all that though.  Somehow it provides a mental extension of the house far greater than the sum of it's physical uses.

  1. I can certainly see why. It's a very nice deck. (You should have some hanging flower pots or something though! But I guess it's not practical with all your going away for tournaments etc...)

I even think of my balcony as an extension of the living space - even though it does not connect any rooms and does not have your kind of view. Soon I'll be able to sit there for a little while on a sunny afternoon again even if well wrapped up!

  2. Deck, verandah, patio, balcony, porch, stoop: Neither fully inside, nor outside... the in-between place ... a place of pause. To give one pause.

Hmmm. I think there's a concept there that could be used for an art exhibition. Or something.

  3. Ahh, you've stained the deck - looks great! What happened to your lavendar?

  4. Monica I like the idea and visual appearance of pots and hanging baskets and have them in Eagleton but here, after a couple of years of growing herbs and plants, I now eschew anything which requires maintenance. If I lived in an apartment a verandah like yours would serve the same mental purpose for me too. I'd feel less trapped.

Thanks, Norma, I like that about it.

Yes, Katherine, it's the inside to outside in-betweenness that is so appealing to me.

How observant you are Pauline. Yes I have just put deck-oil on it because it was getting rather dry and weathered. The lavender was getting tall and straggly and just before I took the photo Wendy came down with the big hedge trimmer and cut it (and anything else that she thought was getting out of hand - I escaped!).

  5. Your place looks wonderful! Trying to imagine it without the deck; it would really not be anywhere near as good. One day when I'll have some money (say, in another 5.000 years), I'll have a balcony added to my flat. Until then, what your deck is for you is my window sill for me.

    1. I can see that Meike. I think I'd spend a lot of time on the window sill!

  6. I have always admired this prefab. Like a camper, much bigger but harder to move.
I love being close to the elements....most of the time!!
